ABOUTMESSAGE

Honorary Chairman of the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival Executive CommitteeSADAO NAKAJIMA

The season for this year's Kyoto International Film and Art Festival has come.
About 20 years on from our predecessor, the “Kyoto Film Festival”, it is my great pride and pleasure to be able to continue to participate in these events in the movie city of Kyoto.
Kyoto is haunted by the ghosts of movies. This was once said by someone involved in films, and truly Kyoto has been drenched in the sweat and tears of many people involved with movies here in Kyoto.
That’s why the light of movies must be protected. And naturally, the purpose of the film festival is for all of the local citizens to get a taste for the wonder of films. Once again, this year the organizers have put together a variety of programs.
It is my hope that as you enjoy the festival and feel the deep connection that Kyoto has with movies.

This is the 4th year of this “Films, Art and Everything Else” event.
This is a town where a thousand year culture has continued to create movies, games, anime and pop culture. It is also a place where high-tech companies have gathered from all over the world, and a city that continue to produce Nobel Prize laureates. Kyoto is always one of the world’s most popular tourism destinations, and has the Agency for Cultural Affairs located in it.
Everyone in Kyoto, and everyone that loves Kyoto come together to enjoy, create and share “everything”. While inheriting traditional culture, a punk culture has also sprung up here. We are also committed to discovering and developing talent.
Connecting life, spirit, people and communities, past and future. The theme this year’s festival is“ 4 days and 3 nights in Kyoto”, and we hope that you will fully enjoy these 4 days in October in Kyoto.

Modern art, crafts, music, food, and fashion...
The Kyoto International Film and Art Festival in Kyoto, the birthplace of Japanese cinema, presents a variety of attractive programs, which aren’t limited to just films. In this its 4th year, the festival has fast become a feature of autumn in Kyoto.
I would like to express my deepest thanks to Honorary Chairman Sadao Nakajima, who has supported the development of this film festival, as well as Executive Committee Chairman Ichiya Nakamura and Yoshimoto Kogyo, who have also made tremendous efforts for this festival.
This year there are a number of new programs, including the“ East Asian Cultural Capital 2017 Kyoto”, a collaboration to deepen cultural exchange between cities in Japan, China and Korea. I am certain that as this festival spreads even further into the rest of the world, it will continue to make advancements. In April of this year, the Agency for Cultural Affairs took a major step towards its complete relocation to Kyoto with the establishment of a Regional Cultural Development Headquarters.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, as Kyoto aims to become“ The World’s Cultural Capital”, we intend to do our best to continue to ensure that this film festival is beloved by many people and to produce a festival which energizes the world with film culture.
We greatly appreciate your continued support.
