SHOZO MAKINO Award

In memory of Kyoto film-maker Shozo Makino, known as the father of Japanese cinema, this prize was established by the 'Shozo Makino Appreciat ion Society' in 1958 for the purpose of honor ing behind-the-scenes movie professionals for their contributions to the development of Japanese cinema.
Presentation and Award Ceremonies have been held from the 'Kyoto Citizen’s Film Festival' to the 'Kyoto Film Festival' and now the 'Kyoto International Film and Art Festival'.
Award winners are selected from living product ion related personnal(producers,directors,screenwriters and major technical staff etc.) that have greatly contributed to the development of Japanese cinema.

TOSHIRO MIFUNE Award

Japan’s leading post-war star, Toshiro Mifune.
Respected both in Japan and over seas, especially for his wild and lively dynamism and spectacular action as a Japanese star, his influence around the world in regards to acting and film expression has been revolutionary.
This award was established at Kyoto International Film and Art Festival, and is awarded by a jury of representatives from the Japanese film industry to an actor that is anticipated to play an active role internat ionally.

SPECIAL INVITATION

The Special Screenings category introduces films that are scheduled for release after the Kyoto International Film Festival 2017 and foreign films that have not yet been released in Japan, regardless of the genre, along with the participation of special guests.
We hope that you will enjoy the varied lineup including “Spark”, the film version of the Naoki Matayoshi bestseller directed by Itsuji Itao and starring Masaki Suda and Kenta Kiritani, and the documentary“ We Love television?”, from Kinichi Hagimoto, who is synonymous as the“ Man with the 100% Audience Rating”.

TV DIRECTOR‘S MOVIE

Beginning with the 2nd Okinawa Internat ional Movie Festival, the TV Director’s Movie Category is a joint project between television stations and Yoshimoto Kogyo, aiming to produce creatively ambitious works, regardless of genre.
Following from Okinawa, a number of works under this project can be seen first here in this program.

SILENT & CLASSIC FILM

Silent/Classic movies with the theme of 'the roots of film in comedy movies'.
The featured program this year will be comedienne(female comedians) that were active in the early days of movies. The program will be full of variety, including the screening of Japanese films from the early Showa period, and ghost and horror films.

Legenda r y Comediennes- Great Sta r s of Gorgeous Hol lywood

As election of masterpieces from famous Hollywood comediennes. Four films from the past will be screened, including Gloria Swanson’s 'The Danger Girl' and romantic comedy 'Hold Your Breath' featuring Dorothy Devore.

Legendary Comediennes - The Queen of Comedy; Mabel Normand

Featuring masterpieces from Mabel Normand, the famous comedienne that represents the heyday of silent films in the 1910s.
Five films will be screened, including 'A Muddy Romance', where Mabel expressed her comedic performance getting down in the mud.

Strong Comedy Feature - A la Car te Comedy

Featured films will include the slapstick comedy 'Ikasama Yaro' and 'Lizzies of the Field', the original car-action comedy before 'Mad Max Fury Road'.

Beloved Detective Films - 'My father loves My mother' found!

'My father loves My mother' featuring Hideko Takamine as a child, and 'Tama wo Nagero', the debut for Setsuko Hara(as a girl).
This time, there will be a new release of a newly discovered work, 'JIRAIYA', by Matsunosuke Onoe.

Benshi narrated Fun for Children and Adults!

Featuring the pessimistic and crazy drama 'Gokuraku Urusai Yatsura' from the founders of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, and 'Chameko no Ichinichi', recorded with songs by Hideko Hirai based on the Asakusa opera popular in the Taisho period.

Friday the 13th - Night of Hor ror and Ghost Stories

Featuring 'Bancho Sarayashiki', the famous ghost story of the girl that is killed after counting dishes because there is one missing, and the gothic romance masterpiece 'Phantom of the Opera' with 'the man with a thousand faces' Lon Chaney.

Comedian / Narrator Grand Prix

In this popular program at the Kyoto International Film and Ar t Festival every year, Yoshimoto comedians challenge themselves as“ Silent Film Storytellers”. They compete by providing the dialogue, narration and original onomatopoeia for silent films.

Nishikikage Ikeda Group

The origin of animation, 'Nishikikage'('Utsushie' in Edo)has been revived with 'Nishikikage Ikeda Group'. Its origins are in Edo-period Kyoto.
A fantastic world is created by manipulating several wooden baths(slide projector) in line with sounds and mouth, altering several drawings of seed plates reflected on a screen made of Japanese washipaper.
Explore the skills of Edo-period Nishikikage with the manipulation of baths under this newly created theme.

Japan premier of Digital 4K Restorations Commemorating 40 years from Chaplin’s Death and 100 years from the Debut of Keaton

The Japan Premiers of Digital 4K Restorations of films by Charlie Chaplin, and the man second only to Chaplin in the silent film era, comedy actor Buster Keaton.Four films will be screened, with live performances by Kimitaka Koga, including Chaplin’s masterpiece 'The Kid'!

Hideo Gosha Special

We will present the works of Hideo Gosha, a director whose work is garnering attention 25 years after his death, from his early to later works, along with stories from people that worked with him that you will only hear here.

Yuya Uchida Rock’n Roll Movie Vol.4

This is the 4th annual special program presented by Yuya Uchida at the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival!
This year we will again present works from the unique perspective of Yuya Uchida, who is active in a number of fields.

FILM FESTIVALS COOPERATIVE

The Kyoto International Film and Art Festival is not the only film festival in Kyoto!
A variety of concepts from the unique birthplace of movies has led to a great number of artistic movie festivals and movie events currently being held.
In this category, starting with movie screenings recommended by peo1le from the movie festival held in Kyoto, viewers can enjoy the features of each particular film festival.

Kyoto International Student Film and Video Festival

The Kyoto International Student Film Festival is the largest student film festival, and is planned and managed by university students from around the Kansai area centering on Kyoto.Independent films produced by students from around the world are collected and reviewed. Students create the opportunity for the movie screening, and aim to create future movie lovers.

Kyo Machinaka Film Festival

Based on the theme of 'watching movies while walking around Kyoto', the 'Kyoto Machinaka Film Festival' is held in various locations such as cafes and bars etc.
This year it will not be held on its own, but has instead been invited to screen films at the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival.
There will also be performances by musicians before screenings.

Gion Tenmaku Film Festival

Held on July 15 each year, two nights prior to the Gion Festival(Yoiyoiyama).
An outdoor cinema will appear in the pedestrian heaven of Shijo Dori.Marking its 10th year, this is becoming a new summer tradition for Gion.Plenty of valuable films and videos of Kyoto will be screened.The Kyoto International Film Festival 2017 will screen the 'European Project Kyoto New Cinema Anthology(vol.1-5)', recommended from the Gion Tent Film Festival.

Kyoto International Indies Cinema Festival

The film festival will celebrate its 11th year with the theme of 'Sharing the Heart of the World'.
Short films with high educational value from around the world are judged, and awarded works are screened under the 'Kyoto Video Awards'.
Various discussions are held every year on the theme of video in talk sessions.

Kinder Film Fest KYOTO

A 'Jury of Children' selected by application are selected for the Kinder Film Fest Kyoto, marking its 23rd year, and the jury watch all of the works on festival day and selects a Grand Prix winner after deliberation.
Winners from the 3rd Kids International Film Festival in Okinawa(KIFFO) Grand Prix and the German Film Awards Children’s Category Best Film will be screened.

CSEAS, Kyoto University

'Visual Documentary Project 2016 Prize-winners & Asian Documentary Films' from the Center for Southeast Asian Studies(CSEAS). Kyoto University
In 2012, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies(CSEAS), Kyoto University started the Visual Documentary Project(VDP).
This screening int roduces 4 selected documentaries from 2016 under the theme 'everyday politics in Southeast Asia' and the premier screening of the Malays ian Documentary 'Absent Wi thout Leave.'

Joint Works With Okinawa International Movie Festival

With the 10th year of the Okinawa International Movie Festival in 2018, the OIMF has become a feature of the spring in Okinawa.
There will be screenings of 'Born, Bone, Bo-on' from Director Gori, 'Yanbaru Kyo! Kyo! Kyo!', produced in Kunigami village in Okinawa, and 'Ryukyu Cinema Paradise', a documentary about the 'Shuri Theater', the oldest existing movie theater in Okinawa.

This is a project which allows you to experience on screen a new side of Kyoto, together with the good old Kyoto, with the introduction of people and places from a variety of perspectives, of the Kyoto that you can’t see just by visiting.

ANIMATION

2017 marks the 100th year since Japanese animation was first screened. Over its 100 year history, animation has achieved a significant position within the visual culture of Japan today.Under the new screening category of Animation, we will be holding screenings and related events for features and shorts which can be enjoyed by all ages.Our Navigator this year will be the 'Eccentric Family', appointed as the 'Special Kyoto Goodwill Ambassador' of animation!
This animated film of the 'Eccentric Family' novel of the same name by Mihiko Morimoto is a mysterious story which mixes humans with four raccoon brothers and a goblin set in modern Kyoto, and after its appointment by Kyoto City as a 'Special Kyoto Goodwill Ambassador', it was selected as the navigator for this event.
